สวัสดีครับ

       ทุกวันนี้มีเว็บฟรีดิกชันนารีอังกฤษคุณภาพเยี่ยมซึ่งมีชื่อเสียงติดอันดับโลกอยู่หลายเว็บ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งดิกที่เราเรียกกันว่า learner’s dictionary ซึ่งมีคุณภาพที่ตรงกันหลาย ๆ อย่าง และดูเหมือนจะแข่งขันกันด้วย เช่น พยายามเขียน definition หรือคำจำกัดความของคำศัพท์ให้ง่ายมาก ๆ, มีประโยคตัวอย่าง, มีคำอธิบายเพิ่มเติมในการใช้, มี phrasal verb, idiom, collocation, มีภาพประกอบ, มีไฟล์เสียงอ่านคำศัพท์ให้คลิกฟังพร้อมโฟเนติกส์ให้อ่าน ถ้าท่านถามว่าเว็บไหนดีที่สุด ผมก็ไม่รู้จะตอบยังไง  เพราะมันน่าใช้ทั้งนั้น

       แต่เอาอย่างนี้แล้วกันครับ วันนี้ผมขอแยก learner’s dictionary พวกนี้ออกเป็น 3 ประเภท ตามลักษณะการให้คำจำกัดความ  ท่านอาจจะใช้ทุกประเภทก็ได้ในโอกาสที่ต่างกัน

ประเภทที่ 1:

มีคุณสมบัติดี ๆ อย่างที่ผมพูดแล้วข้างต้น คือ 7 เว็บข้างล่างนี้

ประเภทที่ 2:

มีลักษณะเด่นที่แปลกออกมาคือ จะให้คำจำกัดความของทุกความหมายโดยใช้ประโยคเต็ม ๆ ประเภทนี้มีอยู่ยี่ห้อเดียว คือ ดิก COBUILD -     เว็บ  

เช่น ตัวอย่างข้างล่างนี้

love:

If you love someone, you feel romantically or sexually attracted to them, and they are very important to you. 

Like:

If you like something or someone, you think they are interesting, enjoyable, or attractive.

แต่ถ้าเป็นดิกเล่มอื่นในประเภทที่ 1 เขาจะไม่อธิบายโดยใช้ประโยคเต็ม ๆ แต่เขาจะใช้กลุ่มคำหรือวลีแทน  เช่น

love (Oxford)

to have very strong feelings of affection for somebody

like (Cambridge)

to enjoy something or feel that someone or something is pleasant

ประเภทที่ 3:

เป็นดิกที่มีลักษณะเด่นต่างออกไป  2 ประการ ตามที่เขาโฆษณา คือ

• a dictionary with a soul
• Real world examples, hot off the presses.

หรือแม้แต่คำที่น่าจะมีความหมายหนัก ๆ เขาก็นำมาสรุปเขียนได้กระชับน่าสนใจ เช่น คำว่า politics

หรือบางทีก็แทรกมุขหรือเกร็ดความรู้เข้าไปด้วย เช่น คำว่า banana

       อีกส่วนที่น่าสนใจ ก็คือ ที่เขาบอกว่า Real world examples, hot off the presses. คือเขาจะนำประโยคตัวอย่าง ใหม่ ๆ สด ๆ มาจากแหล่งต่าง ๆ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งจากเว็บข่าว เช่น BBC, CNN ซึ่งถ้าเราต้องการ ก็สามารถคลิกเข้าไปอ่านเนื้อหาเต็ม ๆ ได้ ประโยคตัวอย่างนี้จะอยู่ด้านขวามือ มีหลายประเภทให้คลิกเลือก เช่น Fiction, Arts, Culture, News, Business, Sports, Science, Technology ถ้าเรากวาดตาดูประโยคตัวอย่างที่เขาให้มาแล้วไม่รู้สึกชอบ  ก็คลิก Next > ไปเรื่อย ๆ

       สำหรับดิก  vocabulary.com/dictionary นี้ ผมขอแนะนำวิธีฝึกว่า   ให้ท่านพิมพ์คำง่าย ๆ อะไรก็ได้ลงไปที่ท่านรู้คำแปลอยู่แล้ว แล้วก็ฝึกอ่านท่อนแรกของคำจำกัดความที่เขาให้มา จะถือว่านี่เป็นการฝึก reading skill ก็ได้ วันหนึ่งทำสัก 10 คำก็น่าจะได้อะไรเยอะทีเดียว
