ฝึกภาษาอังกฤษกับ VOA : Science & Technology

        ท่านผู้อ่านครับ ผมได้อ่านข้อความทางวิชาการตอนหนึ่งซึ่งผู้เขียนพูดได้น่าสนใจทีเดียว คือเขาบอกว่า ตอนเด็ก ๆ ซึ่งเราสอนให้เด็กอ่านหนังสือนั้น เราเข้าใจว่าเมื่อเขาอ่านเป็นแล้ว ต่อไปเมื่อเขาอยากจะอ่านอะไรเขาก็อ่านได้ เหมือนถีบจักรยานเป็นแล้ว ต่อไปจะถีบคันไหน-เมื่อไร-ที่ไหน ก็ถีบได้ทั้งนั้น ทักษะในการอ่านหนังสือกับถีบจักรยานจึงเหมือนกัน คือเป็นแล้วเป็นเลยไม่ลืม
       แต่เขาพูดต่อว่า คำพูดนี้ดูเหมือนจริงแต่ก็ไม่จริง เพราะไม่ได้เอาเรื่องเนื้อหาเข้ามาพิจารณา อย่างเช่นเราอ่านตำราแพทย์ ปรัชญา เศรษฐศาสตร์ชั้นสูง หรือฟิสิกส์ ที่เขียนเป็นภาษาไทยนี่แหละ และศัพท์ภาษาไทยที่ผู้เขียนใช้เขียนเราก็เคยเห็นมาแล้วทั้งนั้น แต่เมื่ออ่านจบบทและให้เราสรุป เราก็อาจจะงงมากเล่าซ้ำไม่ได้
       ทางแก้ปัญหานี้ก็คือ ระบบการศึกษาตั้งแต่ชั้นเด็กเล็กจนถึงมหาวิทยาลัย นอกจากสอนวิชาเลือกที่เขามุ่งจะใช้ประกอบอาชีพ หลักสูตรจะต้องจัดให้ผู้เรียนมีความรอบรู้อย่างน้อยก็ระดับพื้นฐานที่จำเป็น ในเรื่องนี้-เรื่องนั้น-เรื่องโน้น เพื่อให้เขาต่อยอดความรู้ในอนาคตได้ทุกเรื่อง ไม่ใช่รู้แบบไม่รู้เรื่อง
        เมื่อย้อนกลับมาดูเรื่องการฝึกภาษาอังกฤษ มันก็ทำนองเดียวกัน คือนอกจากเรื่องพื้นฐาน 2 เรื่อง ได้แก่ ศัพท์พื้นฐานและแกรมมาร์พื้นฐาน อีก 1 เรื่องที่ขาดไม่ได้คือความรู้พื้นฐาน เพราะถ้าขาดหรือมีน้อยเกินไป ต่อให้รู้ศัพท์และแกรมมาร์ มันก็อ่านไม่รู้เรื่อง นี่เป็นปัญหาทั้งภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษ หรือภาษาใด ๆ ก็ตามที่เราจะศึกษา
       ถ้าพูดถึงเฉพาะภาษาอังกฤษ คำแนะนำสั้น ๆ ของผมก็คือ ควรฝึกตัวเองให้ชอบอ่านหรือสนใจหลาย ๆ เรื่อง เมื่อเราอ่านหลากหลายเรื่อง reading skill ของเราก็จะมากตามไปด้วย แต่ถ้ากระจุกความสนใจอยู่แค่ 1 หรือ 2 เรื่อง เมื่อไปอ่านเรื่องนอกอาณาจักรแห่งความสนใจ ก็จะรู้เรื่องน้อย หรือไม่รู้เรื่อง หรือไม่อยากรู้ คือเคยชินที่จะปิดทั้งสมองและหัวใจไม่ไปรู้มัน
       ที่ท่านอ่านมาตั้งแต่ต้น คืออารัมภบทครับ
       เนื้อหาจริง ๆ ในวันนี้ที่ผมจะแนะนำก็คือ ที่เว็บ VOA Learning English เขามีคอลัมน์ Science & Technology ที่นำข้อมูล ความรู้ และข่าวความก้าวหน้าทางวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีของโลก มาย่อยให้ฟังด้วยภาษาอังกฤษที่ง่าย ๆ
